Every day, dump trucks have been leaving human waste in a landfill in the capital of Ghana. In that area, sanitation has always been a problem, but now they believe they can turn all the human waste into fertilizer, biofuel, and biodeisel. This concept can increase food production and fuel the nation at a much cheaper price. A person named Sunesson lived in Ghana for 6 years and decide to change this santitation problem by creating a company that is now turning about 750,000 litres of Accra’s liquid waste a day into thousands of kilograms of fertilizer. His company has helped decrease the amount of waste being dumped in the ocean by half. A professer has also found a way to extract methane from the waste and chemically convert it to methanol to use as biodeisel. Another goal to this concept is to limit exposure to human waste and reduce fecal-borne diseases such as cholera. At this point, not enough funding is given to this project, but people like Sunesson feel that once they see how much this can do, money will come pouring in.
I think this is a very weird but cool idea that they can turn human waste into different things such as fertilizer and biofeul. Not only does it help plants, but it reduces the amount of waste dumped in the ocean and increase santitation in areas like Ghana. I believe that this would be a world wide concept one day and with more funding the price of these fertilizers and biodeisels will reduce in price so that everyone can afford this.
